The 2018 Jacob Hespeler Hawks football team capped off a memorable, and undefeated, season by capturing all-Ontrio OFSAA honours, their first-ever provincial high school team title, and doing it in convincing style, beating the Ganonoque Trojans 48-0 in the Central Bowl in Ottawa. The Hawks, coached by Greg White, Dave Stoddart, Josh Pirie, Anthony Maggiacomo, Nikko Morito Barber, Philip Edworthy, Jason Bertrand Mackenzie Wilson and Ella Harvey, had been to the OFSAA finals in both the preceding years but had come up short when they lost to Lorne Park in 2017 and A.N. Meyer in 2016. But having knocked on the door in the two previous years, they returned to the Central Bowl with one of the strongest high school teams ever assembled in the province in 2018. And this time there was no doubt as to who the best high school football team in Ontario was. The team seemed to gain strength as the season progressed. Advancing to the provincial championships, they earlier beat the Elmira Lancers 37-7 to win their sixth consecutive Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) title, and then downed the Resurrection Phoenix 29-8 to capture their third straight CWOSSA title. “This dedicated group of players came to practice every night and worked hard at achieving their goal,” said coach White. But the team was quick to give thanks to parents, boosters, the community, the yellow-jacket crew and the staff and students at Jacob Hespeler for their season-long support.
